In its work, the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights seeks to demonstrate how international law and international legal instruments can be used to influence societal development in a democratic and peaceful direction. This is achieved through education, advocacy, information activities, monitoring, and international cooperation. The Foundation supports capacity development among partner organisations both abroad and in Sweden. In order to act as a catalyst and promote coordination among different actors, the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights often works in collaboration with other organisations, both in Sweden and internationally.<\/p>\n

In its work, the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights strives to ensure a clear link between its activities in Sweden and its international engagement. This means that the Foundation draws on experiences from its international partners, while insights gained through its work in Sweden are also shared with partner organisations in other countries.<\/p>\n

In addition to its work to directly promote human rights, the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights works to clarify the meaning and practical significance of a rights-based perspective. The Foundation views Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals as central to the development and implementation of human rights, and considers human rights to be a prerequisite for achieving the Goals. In this context, Goal 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies is of particular relevance to the Foundation\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

In the following interview, Secretary General Ulrika Strand discusses how the work of the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights aligns with Agenda 2030.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

How does the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights contribute to the realization of Agenda 2030<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 The work of the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals as a whole, and just as with human rights, it is not possible to single out individual goals, as they are interconnected and reinforce one another. A particularly important part of the Foundation\u2019s work to promote the equal value of all people is the advancement of gender equality (Sustainable Development Goal 5) and equality (Goal 10), both of which are central to the work for peaceful societies, Goal 17.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Overall, Agenda 2030 is about eradicating poverty by promoting just, inclusive, and sustainable societies. For us, this clearly reflects our two thematic focus areas: economic, social and cultural rights, and contributing to redress for gross human rights violations. This is done through both direct initiatives here in Sweden \u2013 such as highlighting the mandates of the Swedish truth commissions working to provide redress for human rights violations committed in our own country \u2013 and internationally, by supporting the work of partners in countries such as Colombia and Myanmar.<\/p>\n

You work, among other things, with awareness-raising initiatives on economic, social and cultural rights. What are these rights, and how do they relate to the goals of Agenda 2030?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 Economic, social and cultural rights \u2013 that is, ESC rights \u2013 are an area the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights has worked with for a long time. They form part of the indivisible human rights to which we are all entitled, just like civil and political rights, which tend to receive more attention. Economic, social and cultural rights include minimum requirements such as access to food for the population, basic primary healthcare, housing, and the most fundamental forms of education.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Economic, social and cultural rights are sometimes discussed as if they were primarily a matter of political and economic priorities, but States are obliged to ensure a minimum core of human rights regardless of resource constraints. And this is not only about the allocation of resources, but also about guaranteeing participation without discrimination. It is important that these issues are not viewed as individual problems, but rather that it is made clear that they concern structures that exclude or discriminate.<\/p>\n

\u2013 The lack of economic, social and cultural rights is not a matter of resources or politics, but of poor implementation of internationally binding rules. Agenda 2030, with its commitment to leave no one behind and to reach those furthest behind first, embodies the very essence of economic, social and cultural rights.<\/p>\n

The Agenda is guided by the principle \u201cLeave no one behind.\u201d What does this mean from the perspective of the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2013 At the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals is the commitment that no one should be left behind in development, and within a rights-based approach, participation is a key principle. For us as a human rights organisation, this is a clear call from rights-holders that no one may be left out in the work to realise human rights.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Voices and perspectives, including those of people who are not part of the majority or do not conform to prevailing norms, must be heard, taken into account, and serve as a starting point. Otherwise, people are excluded\u2014both figuratively and literally\u2014from their rights and from the opportunity to live lives that most take for granted. The further people fall behind in development, the more time passes, and the greater the disparities become, the harder it is to catch up on what has been missed.<\/p>\n
